Made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and then triple distilled in copper pot stills, Redbreast 15 is comprised exclusively of Pot Still whiskeys matured in the finest oak casks for no less than 15 years. A careful balance of first fill and refill casks accentuates the assorted spices within Redbreast’s characteristic full and complex flavour.

Full and rich with a complex yet balanced mix of berry fruits and aromatic oils.

Fully round and mellow with the succulence of fleshy fruit combined with spices and toasted wood.

Long and sophisticated.

Our Review

Review 111 - St Patricks Day 17th March 2021

Last year for St Patricks Day we reviewed Jameson Original, we like to review different distilleries, so for this year, we have opted for a Whiskey sent as a sample by Nick Gascoyne. During the summer of 2020 Nick was kind enough to send us the sample of Redbreast 15 year old as part of a dram swap. This is a whiskey that we have been wanting to try for quite sometime, it is only through these incredible dram swaps that we can explore such a wide array of styles of whisk(e)y from around the world, so a massive THANK YOU to everyone who has been kind enough to exchange drams.

Redbreast is an Irish Whiskey distilled at the Middleton Distillery, County Cork, Eire.
Distilled in traditional copper pot stills, the mash is a mix of both malted and unmalted barley and triple distilled. It is bottled at a strength of 46% ABV, which is great to see. Regarding filtration, there are comments sitting both sides of the fence on whether it is or is not chill filtered, there is no mention on the box, bottle or website about the matter, so we are going with it being chill filtered until we have confirmation. It is colour adjusted.

To buy it is widely available, some prices we looked at while researching as follows

Master of Malt £69.90
The Whisky Exchange £76.95
Royal Mile Whiskies £77.95
Amazon UK £69.90

Giving an average price of £73.67, for a value score it achieves 88 out of 100.
As the price suggests it is quite expensive for a 15 year old whisky, expecially when comparing to Scotch.

The whisky has been matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-oloroso sherry.

On the nose, immediately this is sherry on the nose, it is musty dark and rich fruits, with ginger showing as the only spice. It is quite aromatic and very complex, suggesting adding a touch of water will open things up.

On the palate, first things, if this were a blind dram, we would consider this to be a scotch, the initial taste doesn't reveal anything about its origins. This is really nice on the taste. It is very sherry influenced with dark musty fruit cake notes, it has a syrupy texture with leathery books in a damp and dusty room. There are also the fruit cake spices of nutmeg, ginger, clove and cinnamon. There is another funky flavour which is reminiscent of damp books.

With water on the palate reveals more of the bourbon, the dark fruits drop off a little giving vanilla and honey, with an almost smoky flavour, maybe toasted oak. We didn't get any of the creamy or buttery notes that Irish whiskies tend to be noted for.

This whisky is great, it can hold its own against most sherry influenced scotch whiskies of the same ABV. Yes it is slightly higher in price than compariable scotch, but this is worth the price.

For an overall score we give it 89 out of 90, we await confirmation of the filtration and colour status. We do recommend this whisky if you enjoy sherried whisk(e)y.
