This whiskey is aged in heavily charred new oak barrels from Minnesota and bottled single barrel at 94 proof, using state-of-the-art technologies to achieve precise consistency and quality. The four grains define its depth with a banana nose, creamy palate, and spicy finish. Perfect sipped straight or with a single sphere of ice.

Review 141 19th December 2021

For this review we delved into our extensive sample box, specifically looking for something from the USA. Purchased from Master of Malts Drinks by the Dram collection of whisky tasting samples, we selected the Koval Four Grain.

Koval was the first distillery to establish in their home of Chicago, Illinois following the repeal of prohibition in the USA.

A single grain whiskey, bottled at 47% ABV (940 proof) is it distilled from Organic Oats, Malted Barley, Rye and Wheat. It is interesting to see that corn is omitted, this is actually quite well played given Bourbon Whiskey must be at least 51% corn, how will this impact on peoples perseptions of nose and taste when you mention its an American Whiskey?

The colour appears quite light for an American whiskey, so we can assume that this is natural colour as is the law for Bourbon at least, this is confirmed by the listing on The Whisky Exchange. We also believe this will be Non Chill Filtered. It has been matured for 2 years in new heavily charred American oak from Minnesota and bottled as a single barrel offering.

It retails online at

£48.83 Masters of Malt (Currently Out of Stock)
£49.25 The Whisky Exchange

However, these are 500ml bottles. For the conversion to UK 700ml bottles you will be looking at around £68, which for a 2 year old whisky is expensive, it achieves a value score of 65 out of 100. We believe this is the lowest value score of any whisky we have reviewed todate.

On the Nose, it does have that bourbon quality to it, you can see the dna or its heritage. It has a vanilla chocolate cream note, similar to a Bimber or Westland.
There is some citrus and spice, but the vanilla cream is the most notable.

On the palate, this is quite nice. It has those bourbon qualities with vanilla and caramel. The texture is quite chewy (Syrupy) with a nippy alcohol bite.
There is chocolate, vanilla chocolate. There is a great sweetness (However there is no corn). There is a chemical note similar to what you may find in a nail varnish.

The finish is spicy and bitter, but as it lingers on the palate, there is an unpleasant aftertaste. There is also some raw and young alcohol coming through as you would expect from such a young whiskey, under Scotch Whisky Rules, this couldn't be clased as a whisky, but in the USA, due to their climate particularly, such rules aren't as inforced.

Unfortunately we can't really recommend this bottle, for what it is, its too expensive for a two year old, its too youthful and not refined enough on taste and palate. Finally that finish has that distracting note. For an overall score we can't go any higher than 72 out of 100.
